What to Wear to Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class

Published by Lone Wolf BJJ Academy — Washougal, WA

Two adult students take a break and laugh together during Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Lone Wolf BJJ Academy.

One of the biggest hesitations we hear from first-timers isn't about the training itself — it's "what do I even wear?" Here's the simple answer.

You do not need a gi for your first class. A gi (the traditional woven Jiu-Jitsu uniform) is a real investment, and most academies, including Lone Wolf, don't expect a new student to show up in one on day one.

What to wear instead:

  • A comfortable, form-fitting athletic t-shirt or rash guard (avoid loose shirts with pockets, zippers, or metal — they can catch during grappling)
  • Athletic shorts or leggings without pockets, zippers, or belt loops
  • No shoes on the mats — most BJJ training is done barefoot

What to bring:

  • A water bottle
  • A small towel
  • A change of clothes if you're heading elsewhere afterward
  • An open mind — everyone in the room remembers their first class

What NOT to wear:

  • Jewelry (rings, necklaces, earrings) — these should come off before stepping on the mat for safety
  • Jeans, athletic pants with zippers, or anything with hard plastic components
  • Cologne or heavy scents — you'll be in close contact with training partners

When you're ready for a gi: Once you decide to continue training, your instructor can guide you toward the right gi size and brand. There's no rush to buy one before your first class — or even your first few classes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy a gi before my first BJJ class?
No — wear a rash guard or fitted athletic shirt and shorts/leggings without pockets or zippers for your first class.
Should I wear shoes on the mats?
No, BJJ is trained barefoot. Bring sandals or slides for walking to and from the mat area.
What if I don't own workout clothes without zippers?
A simple cotton or moisture-wicking t-shirt and athletic shorts or leggings work fine — just avoid anything with hardware that could scratch a training partner.
